Mrs. House is healthy again after some regular maintenance and a new macerator. After two weeks of hot days and nights she and I very much enjoyed Michigan’s cooler temperatures. We spent time in many parts of the state and met up with friends who were also visiting. We covered much of the same territory that we did with Kaye but at a pace that allowed for more exploration. |
Stuart Padnos was a self-taught scrap metal artist whose work can be seen all around Michigan including at his family’s scrap metal business.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
It was a pleasant drive up to Sleeping Bear Dunes, stopping in little towns along Lake Michigan.
Visitors get around the 90 acres of attractions in Greenfield Village on historic train, horse-drawn carriage or Model T. Even a work truck I saw was an early model. Many of the buildings are original of famous makers – Wright brothers bicycle shop and home, Henry Ford’s birthplace, Logan County courthouse where Abraham Lincoln practiced law. There is also an early American craft village with artisans employing authentic techniques, working farms and a replica of Edison’s Menlo Park Compound which includes the original R&D lab.
On display are innovative designs, machines – steam powered farm equipment, locomotives, early airplanes, furniture and automobiles. Every day a Model T is built by visitors, one part at a time. At the end of the day it is dismantled to be ready for the next day’s construction.
